What Is construction plant insurance?

Plant insurance, or contractors’ plant insurance, special types insurance or engineering insurance as it’s also known, provides cover for specialist vehicles and equipment such as JCBs, diggers, and mobile cranes.

While plant insurance is often associated with the construction industry – hence it being called construction plant insurance – it can also protect equipment used in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, haulage or even at people’s homes.  If you’re hiring a mini digger or a cherry picker for a day, then you’ll need a hired-in plant insurance quote.  In any case, this is a flexible form of protection and a plant insurance policy can include cover for common risks, including:

  • Loss or theft
  • Accidental damage
  • Malicious damage
  • Hire fees – for hired-in plant
  • Road risks – which allows you to drive plant vehicles on public roads
  • Off-site storage
  • Tools

Who needs plant or hired-in plant insurance?

If you own or hire plant equipment, then you should have plant insurance.  The sort of people and businesses that most commonly take out a policy are:

  • People hiring plant for a specific task – be it a homeowner hiring a mini-digger for a day to dig foundations or a construction firm hiring welfare units for the duration of a build, both would benefit from having hired-in plant insurance
  • Businesses and individuals that own plant
  • Construction firms
  • Warehousing businesses – for forklifts and other lifting equipment
  • Agricultural businesses and farmers
  • Haulage firms
  • Manufacturers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Civil engineering companies

These are just some of the types of businesses and individuals who many need plant insurance.  For more details and some independent plant and hired-in plant insurance advice, please call us on 0800 977 6037, contact us today or read our guide to plant insurance here.

What can plant insurance cover?

  • Theft
  • Loss
  • Accidental damage
  • Road risks – so you take vehicles on the road
  • Public liability insurance – if someone is accidentally injured or has their property damaged while you are you can be sued for compensation.  Public liability insurance of between £1m and £10m can protect you from any losses should you be found liable
  • Third-party working risks (TPWR) – covering damage to other people’s property
  • Glass cover
  • Loss or damage to trailers
  • Tools, and equipment including workers’ tools
  • Off-site storage
  • Static equipment such as welfare units
  • Cover while in transit – so if your equipment is involved in an accident or is damaged while its being moved from job to job, you’ll be insured
  • Ongoing hire charges – if hired-in plant is damaged or stolen, this can cover the ongoing hire charges, usually 90 days

How much does plant insurance cost?

At Coversure Hull we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions for our clients.  Instead, we’ll get to know your needs and create a package of cover that fits your requirements.  What we can say is that your construction plant insurance quote will depend on things like the type of cover you want:

  • Owned plant insurance
  • Hired-in plant insurance
  • Temporary plant insurance
  • Annual plant insurance

On top of that insurers will consider things like:

  • The type of plant you have
  • The value of your equipment
  • Where you are using it
  • The type and size of the contracts you are working on
  • Where your business is based
  • Where it’s stored and how secure it is
  • Your plant’s age and general condition
  • If you want road risk cover
  • How many claims you have made
  • The age of the people driving your plant vehicles
  • How long you need cover for
  • Your claims history
  • Your postcode

How can you get cheaper plant or hired-in plant insurance?

This is a question we get asked a lot, and the good news is there are several easy ways to potentially cut your construction plant insurance quotes, including:

  • By shopping around – like any other insurance policy, it can pay to shop around

  • Use an independent insurance broker – plant and hired-in plant insurance can involve multiple complex risks with policies containing exemptions and limits that may not be obvious to the layman.  By getting some advice from an independent broker that specialises in plant insurance such as Coversure Hull, you can get the cover you need while they do the shopping around for you

  • Register your equipment with the CESAR Scheme – the CESAR (Construction and Agriculture Equipment Security and Registration) Scheme was established in 2008 to help combat agricultural and construction plant equipment thefts.  It’s free for life and is recognised by major insurers and can help bring down your plant insurance quotes

  • Fit vehicle trackers or a telematics system for mobile and road-going plant – vehicle trackers can help the police locate your equipment if it’s stolen

  • Store your equipment securely overnight, at weekends and when left on site

  • Increase your excess – your excess is the amount you pay in the event of a claim

  • Build up your no-claims bonus– your no-claims bonus (NCB) can also help reduce your plant insurance costs.  You should also ask your broker about longer no claims periods.  Typically, these are set at a maximum of five years, but some insurers will offer no claims periods of seven or even nine years

  • Choose a ‘named driver’ rather than ‘any driver’ policy

  • Get a plant fleet insurance policy – if you have two or more pieces of plant to insure – be they diggers, dumper trucks, steam rollers or forklift trucks – you can get plant fleet insurance

  • Don’t buy the hire company’s hired-in plant insurance – while it may be the easy option, it’s unlikely that it will be the cheapest or the best cover

  • Get an annual policy – if you own plant, or if you’re hiring plant in several times a year, it may work out cheaper to get an annual policy rather than a series of short-term plant hire policies
