What is digger Iinsurance?

Digger insurance is a specialist policy designed to insure companies and individuals who own or operate diggers, JCBs, mini diggers, and other forms of excavation equipment. A typical policy can protect your digger from theft, damage, or loss, and can be adapted to cover your employers’ liability and public liability insurance needs too.

What can digger insurance cover?

Digger and mini digger insurance through Get A Quote Insurance can provide you with many essential protections.  We can tailor cover to your needs, but typical digger insurance policy options include things like:

  • Theft and accidental damage

  • Rented equipment – should your digger breakdown and you need to rent one, this will cover rental costs

  • Auto liability – also known as road-risk insurance, allows you to drive your digger on public roads

  • Owned diggers and mini diggers

  • Hired-in or leased diggers, JCBs, and mini diggers – including ongoing hire charges if the item in question is damaged, lost, or stolen

Are there any optional covers?

Yes, there are a range of optional extras that you can add as part of your digger or mini digger insurance quote.  These can be tailored to you business’s needs.  So, for example, if you’re working on a building site or doing excavations where members of the public are nearby, you may want to consider adding on public liability insurance.  Alternatively, if you have to move your digger from site-to-site you’ll want to have road risks cover.   Common policy options include:

  • Public liability insurance which covers you should a member of the public injure themselves or their property being damaged while you are working

  • Road-risk plant cover – if you use your machinery on the public highway, then you’ll need this policy in place

  • Employers’ liability – this is a legal requirement if you employ people.  It provides cover in the event of your employee injuring themselves or if their property is damaged while at work.  The law says that if you employ at least one person, you must have employers’ liability insurance (also known as ‘EL insurance’) to provide protect you and your employees if they get injured or become ill as a result of working for your business.  Legally, your policy must:

    • Cover you for at least £5 million
    • Be with an authorised insurer

  • Transit cover – if your digger, mini digger, or JCB is involved in an accident or is damaged while being moved from job to job, you’ll be protected
  • Hire charges – if your digger is hired and gets damaged and you can’t use it, this will cover the ongoing hire charges.  Cover typically covers charges for up to 90 days

  • Malicious damage – will cover the cost of repairs should someone deliberately damage your machine

Q. Why do I need digger Insurance?
A. Digger insurance provides a range of specialist protections for digger and mini digger owners and operators. It can cover your diggers, ones you hire or lease, road risks, and public liability insurance needs all on one policy.

Q. Is digger insurance a legal requirement?
A. No, but if you want to drive them on the roads then you will need a road risks element to your policy

Q. Do I need public liability insurance to operate a digger or mini digger?
A. Legally speaking, no, but given the environments you are likely to be working in and the potential cost of a claim, getting public liability cover as part of your digger insurance quote makes a lot of sense

Q. Can diggers be insured while being moved to and from sites?
A. Yes, if you have a road risks element to your policy will you while your digger is driven on public roads

Q. Does digger insurance cover the hire charges?
A. If a hired-in digger is damaged or stolen, you'll usually be liable to continue paying the hire charges, even if you no longer use it. Most digger insurance policies can include this option and it will cover you for 90 days of fees

Q. If a hired-in digger is damaged, am I liable?
A. Yes. When you hire machinery, it means that you are responsible for that item, and you must ensure you send it back in the condition you hired it. If a digger or mini digger you have hired was to break or be damaged and you didn't have hired-in plant insurance, you would have to pay for any repairs
