What type of car insurance is right for you?

Like most motor insurance policies, car insurance comes in various forms, each offers different levels of protection.  The most common ones being:

  • Third-party only – this is the minimum cover required by law and will only protect you for third-party liabilities – e.g., damage to another driver’s car in the event of an accident

  • Third-party, fire, and theft – this is the same as third-party, but it also insures your vehicle should it be stolen, lost in a fire, or stolen

  • Fully comprehensive – fully comprehensive will cover you should your vehicle be lost to fire, stolen, and, in the event of an accident, it will pay for repairs to your vehicle or another’s if the accident was your fault

How to get cheaper car insurance

No one wants to spend more on their insurance than they absolutely have to.  To help you get cheaper car insurance, here are our top tips for cutting the cost of cover:

  • Tip 1: Shop around – it’s a competitive market, and you’ll need to spend some time looking around if you want the best deal.  Just make sure you’re comparing like with like.  Price comparison websites often show policies that look the same, but the covers can vary widely

  • Tip 2: Use an independent insurance broker – an independent broker such as Coversure Hull can not only save you time by doing the shopping around for you, but with our wide range of insurer contacts, we can find you great cover for a great premium

  • Tip 3: Increase your excess – raising your excess – the amount you pay in the event of a claim – can help reduce your car insurance premium.  This is because in the event of a claim, the insurer will have less to pay out and as a higher excess is likely to reduce your chances of claiming for more minor incidents

  • Tip 4: Check the policy wording – extras such as breakdown cover, European cover, or any driver cover are great, but they can add to your premiums. So, check your policy carefully – or have your broker do it for you – to make sure you are only paying for what you need

  • Tip 5: Add additional security to your vehicle – dashcams, in-car systems such as telematics, and having your car parked securely overnight/off the street can all help keep premiums down

  • Tip 7: Get a fleet insurance quotegot two or more vehicles?  Then you can get fleet insurance.  Fleet insurance is an excellent option if you have two or more vehicles be they cars, motorbikes, or vans.  It can reduce the cost per vehicle costs, gives you one renewal date and the flexibility to add and remove cars and drivers as you need to

How are car insurance premiums calculated?

Many factors contribute to how much your car insurance costs, and these include:

  • Your age – the younger you are, the more it will cost, as the risks of a claim are deemed to be higher.  Also, elderly drivers may find themselves paying more for similar reasons

  • Your no-claims bonus – how many years you have gone without making a claim will help insurers decide on your premium as they will give you a discount

  • What you are driving – cars are placed in insurance groups that range from 1 to 50, with one being at the cheaper end and fifty containing sports and luxury cars.  The age of your vehicle is also a factor.   Older cars are less secure and are more attractive to thieves and joyriders as they are less conspicuous

  • Your claims history – how long you’ve been driving, whether you’ve had any claims, convictions, or points on your licence will all be considered

  • Your postcode – where you live makes a big difference to your policy costs. Postcodes with unfavourable crime rates – especially those with higher-than-average car crime rates – will push up premiums

  • Where your car is parked – whether your car is kept in a locked garage overnight or on the side of a public road could, for example, affect your premiums

  • Who will be driving the car – for convenience’s sake, some people need to have a named or even any driver cover that allows multiple people to drive it.  While this is useful, it will probably push up your premiums – especially if the named drivers are young, old, or have convictions

  • Your mileage – the more miles you do, the greater the chances of you having an accident or breaking down, and the higher your premiums are likely to be.  Many insurers will often offer discounts for keeping mileage under a certain limit

  • The type of mileage you do – if you only want cover for personal driving – so-called social and pleasure cover - rather than for business use and commuting, then your quote will be almost certainly lower.  This is because, statistically speaking business mileage is riskier than private mileage

Which optional extras are worth considering with car insurance?

There are a range of options for car insurance, some of the most popular ones are:

  • Protected no-claims bonus – so should you make a claim, you won’t lose your no-claims bonus
  • European cover
  • Business cover – if your car is used for business reasons, then you need to have this in place, or your insurance may be invalidated.  Business cover can include things like driving to work destinations that aren’t your usual place of business, or driving colleagues or carrying business supplies
  • Windscreen protection – chips in the wrong place can cost you your windscreen and your MOT, so it’s a good idea to have this affordable option added in
